Ribbons by Pippa Hale

Following a public call out in 2019, my friend and fellow artist Cat Barrett nominated me to have my name on a sculpture. The criteria was that the nominated women must have lived or worked in the Leeds city boundaries for at least one year.

I was (am) very surprised to get an email confirming my name is on the sculpture, as I had no knowledge that I was even nominated. I feel honoured to have my name alongside other women of Leeds and I am particularly touched that my kids can visit the sculpture long after I’m gone. Here is a link of the other names on the sculpture.

The Ribbons sculpture is made of five corten steel ribbons that rise up out of the ground and become intertwined in celebration of the womanhood that is embedded into the fabric of the city. This sculpture celebrates many women, both past and present, who have made a contribution to our city.
