“Penny has worked with us several times. Her most recent project was to work on a sculpture for our ‘Forget-Me-Not’ garden. This is a special place that our children can visit to have quiet time thinking about people that have been special in their lives. Penny worked with one of our learning mentors and a group of bereaved children to create a sundial based on the work of Matisse. The children researched his work and found out about his life and produced something that they are all really proud of. Penny works in such a way that the children develop all kinds of artistic skills but also feel relaxed enough to talk about their feelings and their fears. In all of the projects that she has done with us we have seen an incredible improvement in the confidence and self-belief of the children she has worked with. The children are proud of new skills that they learn and this confidence has transferred to the way in which they approach other areas of the curriculum.”

“Penny has run a pottery workshop with Year 5 for the past two years, and will hopefully do so for a third this year. Our unit of study has been the Ancient Greeks, and we have looked at the history and construction of vases over a three to four week period. Speaking as someone who isn’t incredibly confident when it comes to teaching art, Penny was an absolute inspiration to myself as well as the children. Her passion for the subject is clearly evident in each of her carefully planned and prepared sessions. Having run this workshop with two very different groups of children, Penny was able to engage and enthuse every member of the class, all of whom took something different away from the sessions. “Penny was a fantastic attribute to our recent sculpture project. She arranged initial meetings to decide what we would like to cover during the sessions and had a wealth of knowledge and expertise to support and improve our initial ideas. Penny then emailed us with a flexible plan which would teach the children the skills and information that they required for their sculpture project. Penny sourced the resources needed and ran each session. The children really looked forward to their art club and were engaged and interested. This was concluded with a fantastic trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park where the children could see the pieces of work by the artist that they had learned about.
