Culture Sculpture

This year we linked the Big Draw to the school theme, which is about the ‘Future’. I thought I’d try and help the kids explore positive ideas for Morley’s future environment and culture. I personally felt this was a good thing to explore as the Covid Pandemic has affected so many people and focussing on a positive future is very helpful.

I contacted the local MP Andrea Jenkyns and she sent me a copy of the town investment plan which lays out the future plans for Morley to be a greener town. I made little house from polystyrene so the kids could draw on a 3d surface. They used drawing pens and they stuck solar panels on and roofs and we drew trees to improve green spaces and air pollution. We made a 3D map of Churwell showing the built-up areas and green spaces. We made wind turbines to go near the M621. We talked about why green spaces are so important and how we can make positive cultural change for the future.

It was a week-long project where each class had an hour to contribute to our 3D map. We also made a culture sculpture showing how our environment links to how we live. Our homes, school, greenspaces and town should be linked to make our lives better. We also discussed positive cultural hopes for the future.

There was an outside gallery of the artwork at the end where parents could see what the kids had made. It was overall a very positive experience where the kids clearly cared about their future Morley.

Most of the materials were purchased from Scrap Creative in Leeds. They are a social enterprise focussed on helping the environment by reusing waste materials from business in our area.
