Questions and Art
This evening was the first Questions and Art meet up in my caravan. There were five of us in attendance and we all discussed our own art making practices and shared how we want to grow our personal art practice.
Asking questions has become an interests of mine in understanding my own art making practices and art in a broader, more general way. We can use questions to explore deeply subjective rationale or we can also use them to create space around a subject and frame the dialogue in a more objective way. Passing opinions can be troublesome when it comes to looking at others art. Subjective views can be loaded with bias and be preoccupied with ‘rightness’ or taste. Questions help the viewer and the artists understand art better.
We started by introducing ourselves and talking about how we felt about our own art. One thing I think we all agreed on in our own different ways, was that art making is important in our lives. Encouraging curiosity was also a fun topic we discussed. One person shared a quote they had seen online saying ‘I need to make it exist before I can make it better’ We reflected on perfectionism and how we might let go of this restriction.
We have some time over Christmas to ask and perhaps try to answer an important question about our art work. We will meet again in January 2027 and maybe next time will be discussing our personal goals, sharing our favourite artists and how they inspire us.
